Pay to Pray: Jim Bakker Sells Trump Benefit Coins as Point of Contact with God

In the “Grifters Gonna Grift” category, I report to you a story I saw on Right Wing Watch. Watch:

So Jim Bakker and Lance Wallnau want people to send them $45 for this gold plated coin to use as a “point of contact” between them and God to pray Trump’s reelection. Wallnau says that unbelievers think coin believers are “crazy” but actually the believers are the “sane ones.”

I don’t think Wallnau and Bakker are crazy. I think they are cynically fleecing people. Grifters gonna grift.

If they are sincere, what a strange and weak god these guys have. From their point of view, their god started a miracle but he needs people to buy a coin to make contact with him to “keep the miracle going.” The miracle is that there are people who will actually do this. Wallnau and Bakker need Trump to stay in office so their scams can continue.

It should be obvious that there is no place in Protestant teaching for financially enhanced prayers. One’s faith isn’t enhanced or released by an amulet or talisman. These people are preaching some other religion.

  1. Truth.

    Matthew 28:1919
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost:
father, son, holy ghost are not Names. These are descriptive Titles. I’m a son, father, husband, fisherman, wage slave but my Name is Mark. [aka Shamgar wielder of an ox goad]

This is the only True Gospel. So easy Trump could even do it.
    Matthew 28:19–John 3:1-7–Matthew :16:19–Acts 2:38-39

It’s very simple. John 3:5 is the mirror image of Acts 2:38. Jesus preached to Nicodemus the exact same sermon as Peter preached. But, if I know you like I believe I know you. You didn’t read those two scriptures yet. Simply copy and paste into the search bar. Bible Gateway KJV is the most user friendly. And hey, if you don’t give a rat’s ass, ok.

These X’ian =like Christ’mas or X’mas] money grabbing bastards, are nothing. They are all anti Christ. Meaning they do not preach Christ. The Trinity is a anti Christ doctrine. Yeah, and probably 90% of what is called Christian today has been baptized into this cult. OMG! tell me it isn’t so! Sorry, but it’s so.
If you don’t want to be hooked up with that current bunch of fake freaks fornicating in the Lincoln bedroom. You had better bail now. Because that group isn’t what they say they are. Church and State is alive and well, shacked up in your White House. LOL yes I laugh, because it’s true.
    Ok, I gotta go,
    see ya,
    sincerely enough,

  3. You really couldn’t make it up!

But I think they have missed a marketing trick here. Why not also claim that, as well as providing a “point of contact” with whatever god(let) they have in mind, the purchase of these coins can afford the proud owner a plenary indulgence?!

  4. Though the critique is fair, it is misleading. He did not call it a “point of contact with God.” He seemed to be implying it as a point of contact with other believers on the same mission, or a point of contact with the mission, to pray for the president.

  5. Can those coins be used to purchase some of Bakker’s end times bucket meals? If so, I want a Auguson Farms Gluten Free Black Bean Burger Bucket, please. Sounds tasty.

Rhett and Link don’t agree, though. https://youtu.be/IMbZp2P7wn4

    1. Every deacon, every elder, every person in a position of leadership at Harvest Bible Chapel needs to step down immediately. Thankful for Julie Roys and the small number of former HBC members who display the courage to speak out, and speak truth to corrupt Evangelical power.

      1. Rotten to the core.
A former counseling pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel said former and current church staff failed to report at least one incident of suspected sexual exploitation of a minor by former Harvest Youth Pastor Paxton Singer. The former Harvest counselor, Rob Williams, also alleged that a former Harvest executive warned him not to report suspected abuse, while a church attorney stood by and said nothing.

        1. Thanks for the link. Julie Roys provides such helpful information. The truths too truthful for pastors, elders, and their devout followers.

  6. I wonder… if enough people bought these golden coins, maybe one of the religious Trump supporters (or Trump himself) might put out a call: “Pool all these coins together… we can forge them all together into a beautiful statue… let that statue be everyone’s Point of Contact to our God, the God that Trump serves as President!”

I mean… really, bottom line: once these coin buyers decide to trust the people selling the coins, the actual nature of the God they’re talking about no longer matters to them. (It is a curious, bizarre thing.)

    1. U.S. White Evangelicals following Trump certainly have already forged their “ēggel hazāhāv.” In place of a physical statue, their golden calf is manifested in their voting habits and political alliances, and it circulates through their megachurches, Fox “News” shows, Trump tweets, St. Petersburg troll farms, Patheos Evangelical blog comment sections like Cranach, and their frothing-at-the-mouth political rallies.

On the brighter side, at least Ireland banned the Arizona baptist pastor still praying for God to murder President Obama.

    1. The article doesn’t actually say that. It says it’s time to end the all male Catholic priests model due to numerous reasons but especially due to the egregious Priest sexual abuse and coverups.

  7. Wallnau and Bakker need Trump to stay in office so their scams can continue.

They scammed quite well during the Obama years. They will continue to scam when Trump is out of office. It doesn’t matter who is there. The one constant is praying on people’s fear and tribalism.

  8. I see in the video that Lance is still claiming to be a Doctor. For anyone who missed it, Warren uncovered that Lance bought his worthless piece of paper declaring that he is now a “Doctor” from a paper mill run out of a house in Phoenix, Arizona. The address of the so called University went back to a telephone answering business that did not even bother to post the name of the paper mill on their sign with dozens of other small businesses. So what a deal! Lance gets to get everyone stroking his little ego at a tiny fraction of the cost that a real doctorate would cost. For a few thousand I could be a doctor too! Mirele was the one who went to the address listed on the paper mill to see what was there.

Why am I not surprised that this little man would be pedaling gold coins with a convicted felon? These guys do believe that you can serve God and Mammon at the same time! As the rock band “Servant” once penned, “I guess Jesus must have lied!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPOE96vnRn4

    1. On the bright side, I bet his doctorate is paid off, while my brother and I will be paying on ours forever.

  9. I’m in Japan right now and the protection or help charms sold at the “popular with tourists” shrines are (a) not even in the neighborhood of this kind of crassness, (b) cost a few hundred yen (so inexpensive) and (c) actually are within the Shinto tradition. Also, (d) neighborhood shrines don’t sell charms and (e) I think the Japanese might politely laugh about the idea of having an election charm for (example) Shinzo Abe, the current prime minister.

In other words, grifters gonna grift.

    1. Any news from Scottsdale on serial abuser Mark Driscoll? Is he reaching the vulnerable (and often undocumented) labor force that keeps Scottsdale’s service economy of retail stores, hotels, and restaurants afloat? Or is he predictably going after the income of aging retiree communities who don’t know how to spend their money?

      1. As far as I can tell, he’s going after the employed 30-somethings, ofcwhich there are many in Scottsdale.

  11. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

    For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
    2 Peter 2:1-6

    1. Notice that the ultimate merchandise is the people themselves (“make merchandise of you”) sold as giving units and traded as collateral to the bankers for the enrichment of the guy at the top, his co-conspirators, and his family and mistresses. And it’s a giant stack of propaganda and mind control techniques (the cynical call it marketing) that hold the whole rotten edifice together.

  12. “When coin in Bakker’s coffer rings…”

Looks like Jim of Jim & Tammy fame has another thing to huckster besides overpriced buckets of CHRISTIAN rice & beans for The Tribulation.

    1. I think he also sells survival food products for the coming apocalypse as well.

    1. Ever heard the interpretation of Revelation where The Beast represents a corrupt political system and The False Prophet a corrupt religious system? Remember which of the two is the Boss and which is the Flunky.

  13. That wouldn’t work. Everybody knows that all the pieces of the true cross are now part of the Ark that is built on the grounds of the new and exciting Ark museum in Kentucky. (the person used to model Noah after was Mitch McConnell?)

    1. Surely he was the model for one of the turtles. As an unclean animal, there would have been another one for him to mate with, what a lucky gal.

  14. It is hardly surprising there are grifters like this or people being taken in by them. What is disappointing is that there are not more people, and esp. religious orgs, calling them out on their scams.

    1. I agree up to a point, but must say that of all the Episcopalians I know, I am probably the only one who would recognize the name “Lance Wallnau” and most people just remember Bakker from being married to Tammy Fay and going to jail.

    2. What is disappointing is that there are not more people, and esp. religious orgs, calling them out on their scams.

    3. My paternal grandmother gave all her money away to these people. We punished her by making her sit through the Farting Preacher VHS videos after her main donee was exposed as a fraud – they’re on youtube btw.
