Ghanaian prof says homosexuality not a US import

Two Saturdays ago, I interviewed Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr by phone about the recent upsurge of anti-gay rhetoric in Ghana. Dr. Okoampa-Ahoofe is a Ghanaian who now lives in the US and is a college professor at Nassau Community College. I intend to incorporate his input in future articles on Ghana. For now, I am just going to refer to a column he wrote for Myjoyonline about our interview. He included just about everything we discussed so it is a pretty efficient way to get across his views.
In short, he is concerned about the level of anti-gay sentiment in Ghana and hopes the country does not move toward a Ugandan approach. Please note, this is a Ghanaian observing Ghana and making this comparison.

  1. Maazi NCO, where is you love and compassion for your fellow human beings? Why the hatred for homosexuals? I don’t get it? The way you write you seem like an educated person I am confused why an educated person holds such homophobic views. It is not a black/white, Western/African, superiority contest, how can you punish human beings for wanting love and affection and life partner simply because they are of the same sex, when this is how some people naturally are. There is nothing wrong with it, they are simply a sexual minority. Why punish people for simply being a minority?

  2. And with Election 2012 fast approaching and a deeply divided NDC in the jitters, making convenient scapegoats out of gays and lesbians as a diversionary tactic seems very attractive to the neo-Fascist ideologues parading as social democrats among the ranks of the National Democratic Congress.

Balderdash !!! No one is picking on anyone. Gayism is just sexual deviance. No sensible African sees gayism as anything more than what it is—- a behavioural disorder that needs to be tackled like other sex crimes in society. Conjuring up images of Nazism, Fascism, Communism, Stalinism, Totalitarianism or any of the “–isms” in a desperate bid to defend gayism is just plain stupid.

Yes one Ghanaian out of millions of Ghanaians who support gayism

It should have read as follows :
Yes, one pro-gay Ghanaian out of millions of Ghanaians that abhor gayism

  4. StraightGrandmother-

Mazzi NCO- In New York they recently changed the law to permit couples of the same sex to marry. Take a look at this picture of who got married.

Can you honestly tell me you “Abhor” these two women?

    Mazzi NCO-
I had a look at your picture and found it interesting…
StraightGrandmother- Okay you found the picture interesting but you did not answer the question I asked you. Let me ask you again-
Can you honestly tell me you “Abhor” these two women?
Mazzi NCO do you abhor these two women or don’t you? It is a yes or no question. You have a big mouth strong opinions, so be a man and answer the question, it is not difficult to answer Yes or No.
Man UP Mazzi NCO say yes or no.

  5. One is sorely tempted to post film clips of screaming homophobes as a kind of ‘counterpoint’ to that delightful couple pictured above! But I will resist the temptation to do so … at least for now.

Oh yes !! In the West, people who oppose gayism are screaming while the sexual hedonists are indulging in the misnomer called “gay marriage” . In Uganda, the screamers are the pro-gay puppet advocates and we— the ordinary decent people— are the ones calmly and smoothly carrying on with our lawful duties…

  7. Mazzi NCO do you abhor these two women or don’t you? It is a yes or no question….

Your question is irrelevant to the issue at hand, which is that the Parliament of Uganda is obliged to act on the general aspirations of the Ugandan people that abhor the practice of gayism and gay marriage.

  8. I saw the couple interviewed and they came across very well – there’s nothing hedonistic about loving, long-term committed relationships.
In stark contrast, vicious lunatics like Bahati and Odonga (there’s an interesting ‘couple’!) advocate the mindless slaughter of such women.

  9. Vicious lunatics like Bahati and Odonga…

Anyone who has ever spoken to Bahati and Odonga or heard either of them address Parliament knows that these guys are articulate and intelligent young men who enjoy the unalloyed support of all MPs across party lines. They are not vicious lunatics. I am sure that this is something Dr. Warren Throckmorton can confirm since he has spoken to them on a few occassions.

Phew !!! I guess this is a relief for the euro-american gay propgandists

Please note, this is a Ghanaian observing Ghana and making this comparison.

Yes one Ghanaian out of millions of Ghanaians who support gayism. I guess this US-based academic is the Ghanaian equivalent of our own Professor Sylvia Tamale of Makarere University. A member of the extremely narrow band of western-centric academics who believe Africa must be remade to be an artificial replica of their beloved Europe or America.

Now, I do not know enough details about Ghana to judge whether his comments about the existence of sexual deviance in pre-colonial Ghana are factual or a fallacy. But I have my strong doubts since I have noticed a consistent pattern of every pro-gay Tom, Dick and Harry claiming that the entire African continent loved gayism before evil white missionaries arrived. Tamale has also said lots of rubbish about my own people loving gayism before the British colonial overlords arrived and I know these stories to be figments of her imagination. I wont be surprised if many Ghanaians strongly dispute the pro-gay narrative of this Ghanaian professor.

Oh we know how this works in America. We had Karl Rove & Bush who used this same “pick on the gays” tactic.

  19. Maazi NCO, where is you love and compassion for your fellow human beings? Why the hatred for homosexuals? I don’t get it? The way you write you seem like an educated person I am confused why an educated person holds such homophobic views.

(a)Gayism violates the culture and traditions of the Ugandan people ( and by extension the African people) and therefore cannot be given legal space to become mainstream as in the Western world
    (b) I do not hate gay sex practitioners. Everyone should obey the culture, values, traditions and the law of the land. We are Africans not Europeans or Americans. Anyone who refuses to do so and goes and hires himself or herself out to cultural imperialists from America or Europe is fighting the collective will of most Africans.

It is not a black/white, Western/African, superiority contest, how can you punish human beings for wanting love and affection and life partner simply because they are of the same sex, when this is how some people naturally are…

Like most Africans, I do not recognize gayism as a moral or legitimate way of expressing human sexuality. I understand clearly that you and many Western liberals genuinely view gayism as a human right matter, but here in Africa, we view same-sex intimacy as sexual deviance and genuinely see such anti-social behaviour as un-African, inhuman and insane.

In New York they recently changed the law to permit couples of the same sex to marry. Take a look at this picture of who got married.

I had a look at your picture and found it interesting… However, let me state that what happens in the United States should stay in the United States. If anyone thinks that we will change our centuries-old ancient marriage customs and traditions here in Uganda to accomodate gay sex practitioners then they are clearly mistaken.
