No huge news here, just been thinking about why the Las Vegas press has not written one word about the connection of Canyon Ridge Christian Church to the international story of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill. Today, I was contacted by a Finnish writer and yesterday alerted that the BBC is investigating the matter yet again and may be in touch. Most American and many European news organizations have covered the story extensively. NPR and Salon have addressed the Canyon Ridge connection but only one story has emerged in Vegas from an alternative paper, and that one messed up the facts of the bill.
I am aware from those close to the situation that reporters from all the papers and the networks have been made aware of the situation. NPR-Nevada devoted a segment to the matter but I am pretty sure that is all. The church was dropped by the largest health and AIDS groups in town, the church supports a bill mentioned by the President and Secretary of State during the National Prayer Breakfast and the local press overlooks it.
And so the misrepresentation continues. CRCC leaders told their congregants that the bill has been misrepresented in the press and the Las Vegas press has not done anything to investigate that charge. Even one local GLB group has been silent. Yesterday, Michael Bussee asked the Human Rights Campaign – Las Vegas on their Facebook page why they have not spoken out. Good question. As yet, no reply has been offered.
In any event, the foreign press continue to be intrigued by the varying responses of Las Vegas evangelicals to the Ugandan bill, even if Las Vegas news organizations are not.
Because Las Vegas press have better things to do than poking their nose into the internal affairs of a foreign nation. It is really a no brainer
Who cares? BBC and CNN International covered the run-up to the 2005 constitutional amendment banning “same-sex marriage” in Uganda. They covered condemnatory statements from western NGOs such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. They also covered the anger and dismay expressed by EU nations. But in the end, “same-sex marriage” was banned in perpetuity once parliament approved the constitutional amendment. Foreign media can cover the Bahati Bill as much as they like, but I strongly doubt that this will make a huge difference. At the right time, the revised Bill will re-emerge and become law.
This goes to show how obsessed Westerners are with gayism. Since the late 1980s, a war have been raging in the Northern part of Uganda, but MOST westerners have little or no interest in this tragedy which has consumed hundreds of lives. But when Uganda announced a measure to combat foreign-controlled gay militants, all manners of ignoramuses from Europe and America who didn’t even know that Uganda existed on map start expressing fake outrage. There must be something about gayism that drives Westerners nuts. Many people died during the Burundian civil war and no one in the West gave a damn—-except the French who were busy supplying arms to keep the war going. But when peacetime Burundi wanted to outlaw an emerging militant strain of gay advocacy directed remotely by foreign NGOs, Westerners suddenly picked interest in the tiny African state and made all manners of condescending comments and threats. Western donor aid blackmailers, who refused wade in to stop the French from fuelling the civil war with arm supplies, suddenly intervened to threaten aid cuts because a depraved sexual behaviour was about to be banned. The Burundians called their bluff and criminalized gayism promptly.
