Christian singer promotes counteraction against planned burning of the Quran

Sonia Vannest an independent Christian singer is organizing a protest outside the church which is slated to burn the Islamic holy book on 9/11. You can read more about her event on Facebook where she is seeking to organize people to come and sit outside Dove World Outreach Center tomorrow 9/10/10.

UPDATE: As is being widely reported, the Quran roast is off and the Pastor who called it off says he got a commitment from the NY Ground Zero would be mosque builder to move it.

Well now, “pastor” Jones says he might postpone the bonfire, and hold it later…

UPDATE:

New UPDATE 9/10/10 12:35

With the indecision of the Quran burning by the Dove World Outreach Center still in limbo, the Christian Counteraction Peaceful Prayer Vigil will continue but rescheduled for 9/11 beginning at 4:00pm in front of the Dove World Outreach Center.

5805 Northwest 37th Street Gainesville, FL 32653

Although there may be other groups present, the Prayer Vigil will be a silent, prayerful counteraction displaying reminders that God is Love on signs.

Plan on heavy traffic and parking issues. If you wish to find me, I will be holding a God is Love sign and probably wearing a LIVE LOVE LOUD tshirt.

Contact me if you still wish to attend and group together with me.

  1. Pastor Terry Jones Requires A Clear Message From God

God’s Word is clear. Romans 12:14-19 says, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.””

Terry Jones is a confused pastor who cannot defend his plan on the basis of Jesus’ words. Instead, he is acting out of his own human wisdom, a guaranteed prescription for tragedy. However, according to Moran, Jones claims if God sends him a clear message not to do it, he won’t. — Karyn Brownlee

  2. Erp,

Thanks for the correction. What a horrible scheme – save your own ass while putting innocent people at risk of death.

  3. I think the loan was called due around April 2010 well before the announcement of the book burning. I think he needs money and he sees this as one way of getting it from fools who think he is a martyr.

  4. Definitely NOT a laughing matter. I don’t think it’s “representative” of Christianity — conservative or otherwise. It’s a symptom of a growing tide of fundamentalist extremism infesting many religions today.

In response, several Facebook groups are speaking out about this and one organization vows to donate two copies of the Quran for evey one this hate-mongering “church” burns.

They Burn One, We Give Two!

Announcing the “They Burn One, We Give Two” Drive.

Rev. Terry Jones of the Dove Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL intends to burn the Qur’an on Sept. 11 in an act of hatred against Muslims and the Islamic Faith. We join with thousands of religious leaders across the country to renounce this act and affirm those like General Petraeus who warn that such an act could cost innocent lives.

As people of the Book, we are joined to Islam and Judaism in a special way and as an organization that has sought to put that Book into people’s hands for 201 years, we cannot stand idly by while the sacred text of a sister religion is burned as our beloved Bibles once were.

Lest the culture believe that Rev. Jones’ position represents that of all Christians, MassBible is prepared to take a counter action. For 201 years we have given the Bible to those without access. In response to Rev. Jones despicable act, we are prepared to give two Qur’ans for every one that Rev. Jones burns.

They will go to prisons, to hospitals, to shelters, or to any place where there are Muslims without access to their sacred text. This in no way diminishes our belief in the Bible as the Word of God. On the contrary, it is acting on the command within its pages to love our neighbors as ourselves (Lev. 19:18) and to do unto others as we would have done unto us. (Matt. 7:12).

People Of Faith Opposed To The Burning of the Qur’an Our messages, along with many others, seem to have caused Dove World Outreach Center’s website to crash. But please, keep inviting your friends to join this site and promoting it on your Facebook pages and blogs. Together – as an interfaith community – we are sending a strong message that people of faith stand opposed to hate.

  5. From now on he will be under the microscope of law enforcement. His internet service provider dropped him, his insurance dropped him, his loan on the church was called due.

I’ll say he made an impression. Just not the one for which he was hoping.

  6. Pastor Terry Jones’ to call off Koran-burning, says he made deal with ‘Ground Zero mosque’ Imam

Shortly after Terry spoke, NBC and Reuters reported there was no deal to move the Islamic center from it’s proposed site several blocks from Ground Zero.

Terry’s surprise announcement came after President Obama joined the chorus of critics – from across the political spectrum as well as the Pentagon – urging him to cancel the Koran burning.

Jones’ declaration also followed a visit from the FBI to his church in Gainesville, Fla.

  7. The Phelps clan is not too happy over the publicity this guy got. Why? Because in 2008 they burned a Qur’an, I think it was in Washington DC on the steps of the Capitol or something like that.

  8. Florida pastor Rev. Terry Jones cancels Quran burning

    Watch the video.

  9. It’s not a laughing matter but the ‘Dove World Outreach Center’ is a church of less than 50 people. Tragically, the hate-filled message of this small-time pastor and his church garners international publicity and then becomes representative to some of what ‘conservative Christianity’ is all about.

  10. If I lived in that part of the country, I would be there. Is there an online protest going on somewhere?

  11. Mary: This Facebook group has over 13,000 people so far:

As people of faith who respect and value the deep religious pluralism of the United States, we condemn in the strongest possible terms plans by a Florida church, the Dove World Outreach Center in the U.S.A., to hold what they are billing as “”Burn a Koran Day” on September 11th, the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City.

We concur with the National Council of Churches USA which has stated:

“Misguided or confused about the love of neighbor by which Christ calls us to live, leaders and members of this church and others are engaged in harassment of Muslims, and in the planning of an “International Burn the Qur’an Day,” to be held on September 11th. Such open acts of hatred are not a witness to Christian faith, but a grave trespass against the ninth commandment, a bearing of false witness against our neighbor. They contradict the ministry of Christ and the witness of the church in the world.”

We also support the statement issued by the Union for Reform Judaism :

“We can scarcely find words to express our revulsion at the Dove World Outreach Center’s “Burn a Koran Day,” scheduled for September 11. Only those whose minds have been tainted by evil and acrimony would undertake to organize a sacrilegious event such as this and to do so in the name of God and religious piety.

We reject attempts at dividing our nation along religious lines, and, together with the overwhelming majority of America’s religious leaders, commit ourselves to standing up to those who wish to ostracize and intimidate our Muslim neighbors. Our fight is not with America’s Muslims, but with all those whose extremist views lead them to hateful and dangerous actions. We will not compromise our principles of tolerance and understanding, and we will not defer to those who preach hatred while cloaking themselves in religious garb.”

Finally, we applaud the call made by the The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) for people to distribute and read the Qur’an so that we might learn about one another and in doing so build up our national community.

The Dove World Outreach Center’s planned action stands opposed to all we believe to be true about the Almighty. We pray that they will reconsider.

  17. Pastor Nixes Quran Burn, Plans Meeting With Iman

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., said Thursday afternoon he would not burn Qurans after all, and that he would instead be flying to New York City to meet with the iman at the center of the Ground Zero mosque controversy.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump had made an offer to buy out a major investor in the NYC mosque site, according to CBS News. Trump was reportedly ready to offer 25 percent more than was already on the table.

  20. Quran-Burning Church Holds “No Homo Mayor” ProtestGainesville : FL : USA | Aug 06, 2010

The church group who plans to burn the Koran on September 11 held what they called “NO Homo Mayor” protest, last Monday afternoon.

Members of Church “Dove World Outreach Center” marched outside the City Hall of Gainesville, Florida, to protest against the sexuality of Mayor Craig Lowe. Craig Lowe was elected Gainesville’s mayor in April.

“Homosexuality is an abomination of God,” said Dove World Outreach Center Pastor Wayne Sapp.

According to local reports, the mayor says he will not step down. He says no matter what the group chooses to do, he will continue to promote the city as a peaceful, progressive place despite the message of a few dozen people.
