Obama supporters questioning ACORN?

I am going to write some more on this topic this week, but there are Obama supporters who are questioning the ACORN connections.
Read this exchange and see what you think.
In my conversations with former Hillary supporters, I am hearing that ACORN was active on Obama’s behalf during the primaries, with ACORN busing in outside people to caucuses.
Even if you agree with Obama’s policies, these ACORN issues seem reasonable to explore. I also think they are relevant to the current economic crisis given the lobbying ACORN has done to promote unhealthy mortgages.

  1. I didn’t say any one person was equivalent to any one other person, and I have no idea how “longer time in jail” is supposed to make someone a more honorable association.
If we’re going to start making ad hoc, out-of-context comparisons, why not compare Liddy’s advice to shoot federal officials in the head (Liddy says he was not trying to promote strategies for anyone except those with a legal right to protect themselves) with Ayer’s statements such as:

“The reason we weren’t terrorists is because we did not commit random acts of terror against people. Terrorism was what was being practiced in the countryside of Vietnam by the United States.”

“I condemn all forms of terrorism — individual, group and official”.

“Today we are witnessing crimes against humanity on our own shores on an unthinkable scale, and I fear that we may soon see more innocent people in other parts of the world dying in response.”

Regardless of what you think about these quotes or their sincerity, no one seeking to smear Obama with an association to Ayers ever seems to get around to using or examining them.
    Two other points:
    1) If some of Obama’s associations are perhaps arguably more questionable, McCain and Palin’s are perhaps arguably more personal.
    2) Unless there is evidence that a candidate shares some sort of questionable political belief or practice, these sorts of “smear by association” tactics don’t really work very well. As evidenced by the fact that McCain continues to slip in the polls while using an attack strategy.

  2. C’mon people are you really willing to compare J Gordon Liddy, a guy who paid for his crime, to Ayers, who was quoted as saying “guilty as hell and free as a bird”?
    That is ridiculous!
As I have said in previous posts I am not a huge McCain fan but when it comes to comparing questionable political and personal associations he is so much cleaner than Obama.
To think otherwise is to be divorced from reality!

  3. “Where there is smoke, there is usually fire.”
ABSOLUTELY David – it just looks like its in the McCain/Palin camp 🙂

  4. NOT to mention the Palin corruption scandal where she apparently abused her position as Governor 🙂

  5. I’m sure you’ll find a lot of incidental and some quite real relationships that add up to exactly that which is your mind/heart’s desire, Warren. Physician, heal thyself!

  6. And Obama can counter with his own list of corrupt and hateful people and groups associated with McCain, such as G. Gordon Liddy, John Hagee, Oregon Citizens Alliance and Richard Quinn, and which would apparently include his running mate and many of her close separatist/militia allies as well as McCain himself in regard to the Keating scandal and board membership on the US Council for World Freedom.

  7. ACORN is a federal grant receiving organization. I doubt their is any other grant receiving organization that has ever had such a profound record of fraud and corruption and has still gotten funding. If this was truly just an issue of a few bad apples then why did they not change the system to prevent it from recurring? The truth is they need to be able to blame the few that are defrauding ACORN to deflect criticism from the ACORN employees who are defrauding the american electorate.
What McCain needs to do is just read a list of all the people and organizations that Obama claims to no longer be associated with and americans, who haven’t made up their minds yet, will see how long and scary the list is and they will think twice.
Wright, Pfleger, Ayers, ACORN, DSA, Frank Marshall Davis, etc.
How can there be so many people and groups that are corrupt or hateful that seem to have been connected to this guy that he says he has nothing to do with and it is all just McCain and Palin’s racist imagination?
Where there is smoke, there is usually fire.

  8. PS – of course it’s reasonable to explore both what’s going on with ACORN and what ties exist between ACORN and Obama.
But what are the actual claims/rumors, and is there any actual evidence for them?
For example, ACORN’s PAC endorsed Obama for the primary, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it bused in people for the caucuses. Whether they were “outside” people is something that one would need to provide evidence for. Is there any?
My understanding is that individual ACORN employees have been convicted of voter registration fraud before, but in at least one case it was clear the employees were defrauding ACORN, not working under some sort of vast conspiracy. Likewise, in other cases investigators have reported the ACORN organization has been extremely cooperative and publically supported past investigations.

  9. Looks like a few genuinely concerned Obama fans and a bunch of McCain trolls masquerading as Obama fans. “hello fellow obama supporters/democrats! obama is neck-deep in voter fraud by acorn! go see for yourself at fox news or on lou dobbs!” They’re not really very good at pretending to be otherwise, it’s actually pretty laughable.
