McCain wins South Carolina; Romney and Clinton win Nevada

No, this is not a political blog but I will get into the race more as 2008 moves along. I watched lots of coverage of the South Carolina race, where the AP called the state for McCain about 10 minutes ago. McCain has to feel pretty good about his showing; he carried independents, split conservatives and was respectable among Evangelicals. Where is Huckabee’s next victory, outside of Arkansas? I don’t see a place where he would do better than South Carolina, a state where he had some natural advantages.

How about a McCain-Huckabee ticket?Β Β

  1. Whaaa….? It didn’t keep my text…

my uber-important text in last message.

    [crossing fingers]

  2. I like Santorum because he is pro business and strong on defense. I do appreciate the fact that he is socially conservative but that isn’t the principal attraction.

    Drowssap,

And he is a man of his word – he is one of the few people in government who actually does what he says he is going to do, like with the combating autism bill. His character is impeccable – unlike many others who run for office – he is who he presents himself to be.

If I thought Ron Paul could win (also socially conservative) he’d be one of my top picks. Sadly he is nerdy and doomed.

    So…

    ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY!

  4. Would this be the same Rick Santorum who lost his Pennsylvania Senate election 59% to 41%? He was perceived as just too extreme in his positions – including his harsh homophobic statements – to represent the people of the state.

I think Democrats would dance with glee if this guy were on the Republican ticket. They would simply pull out his old statements and run them over and over and watch the Republican numbers drop.

What extremely conservative folk forget is that while you might think your positions are consistent or pure or in line with God, the rest of the country thinks they are nuts.

  5. Sadly Rick Santorum is busy raising a huge and growing family. I think he has 6 or 7 kids with one more on the way.

    Drowssap,

Rick Santorum is consistant about his priorities and I admire that so much. John McCain has 7 children – I still am hoping for a Romney/Santorum ticket πŸ™‚

  6. Warren,

I really hope that you aren’t right about McCain and Giuliani being our only serious options to beat Hillary.

I can’t understand why Romney didn’t catch fire in a GOP primary. He reminds me of Reagan. Admittedly he’s done some moderate things in Taxachusettes, but he probably didn’t have a choice in a state dominated by Democrats.

I hope he wins in Florida.

    ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY! ROMNEY!

Good find Ken. I hadn’t thought about Reagan’s 2nd term. Apparently neither had the network news!

  8. Ok so Mitt has a weird name. He’s not exactly mister excitement either. But the economy is IMPLODING! We need a business guy up there to save our bacon. 😎

  9. If McCain is elected, he would be the oldest president elected to a first term. Reagan was 73 when he was re-elected in 1984.

  10. A president named Mitt… Seriously, is that a nickname? Is it the whole deal? Where did it come from? Enquiring minds need to know.

  11. Doh! Maybe it would help if I wrote his age.

I think they said he’d be 72 when he took office.

  12. Somebody just mentioned on TV that if McCain is elected he would be the oldest president in U.S. history. I googled and sure enough thats true.

    Then again isn’t 70 the new 60?

  13. If Giuliani doesn’t win in Florida, Romney will be the nominee IMHO.

Start practicing to say President Romney πŸ™‚

  14. I don’t think McCain can win a Republican only primary. If Giuliani doesn’t win in Florida, Romney will be the nominee IMHO.

    I guess we’ll know in a week! 😎

  15. The big news in that poll is Giuliani in 3rd place. McCain will make up some of that gap as he gets around the state. G has already been there waiting and all he can get is 19%?!

McCain or Giuliani can beat Clinton; I do not believe anyone else can. If Giuliani tanks in FL, then he has to win New York and CA on super duper Tuesday or it is probably McCain.

I love blogs, I have no real idea what I am talking about but I can say it anyway πŸ™‚

  16. From Drudge this morning…

” FLASH: RASMUSSEN Florida poll to be released: Romney 25, McCain 20, Giuliani 19… Developing…”

YES! No way can McCain win a Republican primary without independents. I knew it!

  17. Ann

That would be a dream ticket. 😎

Sadly Rick Santorum is busy raising a huge and growing family. I think he has 6 or 7 kids with one more on the way.

  18. I am a lifelong Republican.

If McCain wins on the GOP side I won’t vote for him in the general election. He is wrong on immigration, taxes and free speech. The fact he considered switching parties and running as VP under Kerry in 2004 seals the deal for me. I do not like him.

If it wasn’t for independents he would have lost in both New Hampshire and South Carolina. Florida is a closed primary so he’ll have to win with Republicans, not cross-overs. I doubt he’ll be able to do it.

    I’m going with Romney.
